Buying cat furniture can be a confusing and perhaps exhausting experience. Nothing is more frustrating than to set up a beautiful cat tree only to have your cats completely ignore it! I’ve owned cats all my life, and in this article I’ll try to share some of my expertise and insight with you to help make your decision a bit easier.

There are a number of factors to consider in choosing a cat tree, condo, tower, playground or gym. Here, in no particular order, are some things you’ll want to keep in mind:

Your cat’s habits and preferences

Placement and space requirements

Materials and construction

Expandability

Price

What does your cat want?
As a general rule, most cats share certain traits and habits like curiosity, a desire to hide out in a dark, enclosed space and a love of heights – but as every cat owner knows, each kitty is different!

The first thing I’d suggest is to spend a few days paying close attention to your cat’s habits. Where does he usually sleep, hang out or play? What kinds of things does she play with? When you pick her up, does she want to climb up on your shoulders? What kinds of places are you always battling to keep him out of? The answers to these questions should help you decide what kinds of features your cat will appreciate the most.

Features and the kitties who love them:

Kitty Condo: A cat who tends to choose a dark, quiet corner to sleep in will probably want a model with a kitty condo. The same could be said for cats who love to explore shopping bags, boxes, cupboards and other dark, secret places. If your household is one of those busy or hectic ones with kids playing and lots of folks coming and going, kitty might just love the peace and quiet that an enclosed cat condo brings.

Height: Some cats just need to be up high. Some kitties just like to be able to see everything, and some feel more secure up above the reach of the family dog or small children. If your cat is always trying to climb up on your shoulders when you pick her up, or likes to jump up on counters, you might consider getting the tallest cat tree, kitty gym or playground you can. A floor to ceiling tower can be a good solution, and they come in a variety of configurations – some are very simple and take up very little floor space, others can be quite elaborate. There are also a lot of free standing models over 6 feet tall that will satisfy your cat’s need to look down on us poor humans!

Secure Sleeping Spot: Our cat Lucy always sleeps leaned up against something (me, a chair cushion, or the raised lip on her favorite cat perch) – she needs the security of feeling something against her back for her to truly relax. If your cat is like Lucy, you’ll want to be sure that the cat tree or playground you choose has a place to sleep where she’ll feel secure. You might want a sleep tray with raised sides, a curved half moon shaped shelf or a kitty hammock.

Not So Secure Sleeping Spot: Our other cat, George, just sprawls out anywhere – if your cat is like him, he’ll be happy with an open shelf to nap on.

Observation Post: Pretty much every cat likes to keep an eye on things – it’s simply a survival instinct. Make sure the model you choose has a place where your cat will want to spend many hours of the day, whether it’s a flat shelf, kitty hammock, curved shelf or tray. In addition to the style of the observation post, consider the height off the floor and ease of access – especially if your cat is elderly or doesn’t get around as well as he used to.

Kitty Hammocks: We’ve found that most cats love a hammock, although timid cats may need some reassurance at first due to the extra ‘give’ they feel at first when they step on it. Once they get used to it, it may become a favorite ‘hang out’ (sorry – I couldn’t resist!). If your cat is unsure about the hammock at first, put it close to the floor for added peace of mind. As your cat gets used to it you can move it higher if you like.

Play Tubes: Playful cats like tubes or tunnels because they can charge right through them or lie in wait and pounce at unsuspecting passersby – animal or human!

Placement
Even if the cat furniture you choose has all the things your cat loves, if you put it in the wrong place he may completely ignore it. Think about where your cat spends time now – is she a ‘people cat’ who wants to be in the same room as the rest of the family? Is she more of a loner who seeks out quiet spots in unused parts of the house? Does he like to look out the window? (check for nose prints on the glass!)

Years ago we had a fabulous floor to ceiling cat tower with multiple shelves, a kitty condo – the works! The only trouble was that the one place in the house where we had space for it was a room that was hardly ever used. Since our cats like to be with us, they never used the tree, and we ended up donating it to the local humane society. Now we have a smaller cat tree that we keep in the family room where we spend much of our time, and the cats use it every day.

If you can place the tree next to a window there is a much higher likelihood that your cats will use it. A window that opens is best, especially for indoor kitties. The smells and sounds from outdoors will keep them entertained and engaged in the world around them.

Space
Here’s where you start thinking about your needs. How much space are you willing and able to devote to cat furniture, whether it’s a playground, kitty gym or cat tree? Be sure to look at all the dimensions – baseplate size, overall dimensions and height – and actually measure the space you have in mind to make sure it will fit. Many models are modular in design, so you don’t have to put it together exactly as it is pictured. This can give you a bit of flexibility if space is an issue. Look for the phrase ‘modular design’ – not all cat trees have this feature!

Materials and Construction
One of the main considerations here should be how stable and sturdy the cat furniture is. Cats will not use a wobbly or unstable tree. Look for broad bases and bottom heavy designs that will keep it from tipping when your cat jumps up on it. Must also be soft to ensure your pet doesn’t get any cat pain.

Wood: Some cat furniture manufacturers use plywood, others use particle board – and they will all swear that the wood they use is the absolute best! The truth is that each has advantages and disadvantages.

Plywood is quite strong because it is made from thin layers of wood and each layer has the grain running in a different direction from the layer above and below. Since the visible surfaces are covered, the manufacturer can use a lower grade of plywood that will have knots showing and may be a bit rough to the touch. So you may have rough exposed wood on the inside roof of a condo or the underside of the baseplate – not really an issue for most folks, but a good thing to know ahead of time.

Particle board is made of small wood chips bonded together by a kind of glue. It is heavier than plywood, so it adds stability to a cat tree, and the surface is much smoother than plywood. It is more likely than plywood to break – sometimes corners will chip off – but under normal use this shouldn’t be a problem.

Coverings: Carpet or fake fur? The debate rages! One thing everyone agrees on is that whatever covering you choose make sure it is not a closed loop carpet or other covering that can catch a claw. I’m sure you’ve seen a cat stretch out and get a claw caught in a bedspread or sofa cushion – in a relaxed setting the cat is usually able to extricate himself, although he may leave a snag in the fabric! Imagine your cat at top speed romping up and down his kitty playground – if the playground is covered in non cut pile carpet (like Berber) and he catches a claw it can cause a serious injury, result in your poor pet needing pain relief for cats.

Carpet is soft and inviting, but since one of the purposes of cat furniture is to give your kitties a place to sharpen their claws, some folks think carpeted cat furniture just encourages or even trains your cat to sharpen his claws on the carpet on your floor. Personally, I’ve never had that problem, but I know some folks have. If you do choose carpet, make sure it is cut-pile carpet to prevent possible injury from a caught claw. Carpet is secured with staples, which have the potential to stick up and scratch fingers or paws, but well made cat furniture does not usually have this problem.

Fake fur isn’t quite as cushy as carpet, but as long as it is secured with non-toxic glue, there is no possibility of injury from an errant staple. Some manufacturers do staple the fake fur, however, and it is much harder to bury a staple in fake fur than in carpet – if you choose fake fur, make sure that it is glued, not stapled. Like the carpet vs fake fur debate, the staples vs nontoxic glue debate is a heated one. I am of the opinion that as long as the glue is nontoxic and the staples are applied properly glue is best for fake fur and staples are best for carpet. It’s a matter of personal preference as to whether you choose carpet or fur. One nice thing about fake fur is that it is washable – often times models with hammocks are covered in fake fur – check to make sure that the hammock covers zip off so you can throw them in the washing machine.

Pet strength indemnity companies hope someday pet owners in the United States will bump up with European pet owners. A current polled full of American pet owners optional that about three percent of American pet owners had purchased pet vigor assurance for their family pet. A veterinarian who was interviewed after the evaluate was stunned by the fallout. She thought that the review was generous. She believes that fewer then one percent of her patients have any strength burden encompass.

In Europe about twenty-five percent of all pet owners have some organize of pet vigor mask on their pets. The numbers are even advanced in Sweden where about fifty percent of all pet owners rely on pet strength assurance to help pay their pet’s medical expenses.

Some experts deem that the purpose so many pet owners in the United Kingdom have pet shape tension assurance is because of an act passed in 1971. In the United Kingdom dog owners are likely for any accident that their pet is found responsible for. This means that if a dog darts out into passage and causes a seven car quantity up the dog’s vendor is responsible for paying all the costs. Unwilling to dip into their own pickets to wrap their pet’s misadventures pet owners in the United Kingdom hold something called third company assurance. Third party assurance is a modestly a liability assurance specifically geared to pet owners. This will also cover pet health and injury.

Many American pet owners don’t apprehend that there are analogous pet liability assurance procedure available in the United States. Pet owners who would like to leverage pet health liability indemnity to cover any indemnity their pets might be responsible slightly should be concerned that certain breeds of dogs are planned as high threat insurance gear and the owners will be required to pay farther high insurance policies.

It is unclear why more pet owners in the United States don’t asset pet vigor insurance. One possibilities is that pet owners basically don’t understand precisely how costly pet health nurture is. Fifteen minutes useless in a veterinarian’s position can sometimes detriment as much as a hundred dollars. When a pet holder finds themselves facing the outlay of a crisis surgery or has to take their family pet to a university infirmary to have an illness treated they instantly find themselves whishing they had something to help cover the massive vet debit. All too regularly pet owners who find themselves in an emergency spot are forced to euthanize their beloved pet for monetary reasons.

Pet owners who are city dwellers doubtless think that they don’t necessary to agonize about something like pet health insurance because they can’t probably for see when they would want it. Their pets live inside, what could perhaps happen to them. What these pet owners don’t attain is that illness can sometimes disturb house pets the hardest because their immune systems sanctuary’ had a prospect to fabricate up any resistance. We should all look into to pain relief for cats and dogs.

Farmers and ranchers have a very fine cut idea of how hasty and accident and how costly vet care is. Most of them would like to assure the health of their pets but there simply isn’t enough added money to present the monthly premiums. Ranchers and farmers also cultivate to have an effective awareness of illnesses and injuries that lets them discuss their pets on their own.

Cats are the joyous and playful companions. Many people like to own this wonderful pet. However, you need to be very careful and alert about its health and nutrition. A little negligence can lead to a serious health problem in your cat. Given below are some typical cat health questions, which can guide you to understand these health problems.

What should be included in a cat’s diet?
By nature, cats are carnivorous and hence, their diet should be rich in animal tissue for its long-term well-being. For its adequate nutrition, you should provide an appropriate quantity of fats, proteins, vitamins and minerals through its diet. Cats require two essential amino acids such as taurine and arginine. Vitamins including vitamin A, C, and Niacin, dietary proteins and arachidonic acid are required to ensure a good health. Generally, cats require a protein and fat-rich diet than a high carbohydrate diet. All these nutrients are essential for the cat’s healthy growth and reproduction.

What are the common cat diseases?
A cat may suffer from various health problems. Some of the common health problems in cats are rabies, dental disease, allergic dermatitis, food allergy, allergy due to fleas, mites, worm infestation, diabetes mellitus, kidney disease, liver disease, urinary tract disease, feline panleukopenia, Feline Immunodeficiency Virus (FIV), Feline Leukemia Virus (FeLV) and Feline Infectious Peritonitis (FIP).

What are the symptoms of cat rabies?
Rabies is a fatal disease in cats, caused by the virus. It is transmitted through a bite of an infected animal. This infection has an effect on the central nervous system. An infected cat develops an erratic behavior and fever spikes. Some of the main symptoms of cat rabies include excessive drooling, dilated pupils, snapping at imaginary objects, exaggerated response to any stimulus, abnormal changes in the appetite and aggressive, violent behavior. In the last stage of this disease, cat may develop paralysis and respiratory failure, which may finally result in death.

What are the causes of hair loss in cats?
Hair loss in cats is also known as alopecia. It is one of the most common health problems in cats. Some shedding of hair is normal in cats. But, there may be excess hair loss due to glandular diseases, allergies, fleas, mites and ticks. Some of the possible causes of hair loss in cats are fleabite allergy, itching due to mites, ringworm, localized pain due to abscess, food allergies, glandular diseases such as hyperthyroidism, hypothyroidism, Cushing’s disease, and psychogenic alopecia.

Why do cats have bad breath?
There are a number of reasons for bad breath in cats. Some of the common causes of bad breath are ulceration in the mouth; a foreign body stuck in the mouth as well as kidney and lung diseases.

What are the dietary needs of the diseased cats?
If your cat is suffering from any type of disease, then you should make some changes in its diet. Cats suffering from colitis or inflammatory bowel disease should be given a diet containing highly digestible sources of fats, proteins and carbohydrates. You should feed a high-fiber diet to the cats suffering from colitis, diabetes mellitus, anal gland diseases or constipation. The diet of a cat with chronic kidney failure should contain highly digestible proteins. Cats suffering from oral and dental diseases should be given a canned food. A special diet that is rich in beta-carotene and omega-3 fatty acids is recommended for the cats diagnosed with cancer.

What’s about cat’s vaccination?
You can protect you cat from various diseases by the means of vaccination. Most of the cat infections such as rabies, URI, FIV and FIP can be prevented by vaccination. In most cases, vaccination is administered when the cat is very young. It is recommended to give the boosters of these vaccines on a semi-annual basis. When your cat is vaccinated, you will get a certificate from the veterinarian.

The food a cat eats every day means the potential for the toxins to build up gradually, giving the appearance that the diet is not.

Cats, just like any other animal and their caretakers, can get sick. If you love cats and own them, there are some things you should know about the illnesses that can affect your feline friend.

Leukemia
Even for humans, this word is one you never hope to hear. For Felines, it’s a virus, that works by producing an enzyme that it then inserts into healthy cells infecting them. Just like a retrovirus. Because of this, it is a particularly nasty illness.

Cats who have the cat feline leukemia virus are found all over the world. The likelihood of a cat becoming infected can depend a lot on the age of the cat, its health, environment and lifestyle. Cats who are very young or ill have an even greater chance of contracting the virus. This is why cat care is so important.

How Do Cats Become Infected?
Other cats are the main source of the infection being spread. The virus is
passed on in large amounts through saliva or nasal fluids. But it may also be passed on through urine, feces and milk from the cats that are infected. The virus is also passed on through cat-to-cat contact, such as fighting resulting in wounds, when cats groom each other and, sometimes, through sharing litter boxes.

Which Cats Are At Risk Of Infection?
Any cat is at risk of being infected, although some cats are at a greater risk than most. If a cat is living with other cats that are infected or it is unknown whether they are infected with feline leukemia virus, risks of the cat becoming infected are very high.

If you allow your cats to roam free out of doors then their chances of contracting this disease increases. They run a greater risk of coming in contact with infected cats and being bitten or scratched, allowing the virus to transfer itself. Kittens have a greater risk of becoming infected, especially when they are nursing since the virus can be transmitted through the mother’s milk. Also, they have weaker immune systems.

Feline Leukemia: How to spot the symptoms
Feline Leukemia works very much like HIV in humans. It attacks the immune system of your cat, making it difficult for your cat to fight off even the most minor of illnesses. It can cause other health problems for your cat as well, such as blood disorders and has been linked as being a source of cancer in cats.

At first, your cat may show no signs of the virus at all. But over time, your cat’s health will begin to deteriorate or he may suffer from re-occurring illnesses. Some of the main signs that you may notice are loss of appetite and weight-loss. At first, weight-loss will be minimal, but late in the disease, you may notice your cat wasting away.

There are also other signs that usually show up a bit later in the diseases progression. These include fever, enlarged lymph nodes, pale gums or gums that are inflamed.

By paying attention to your cats health, learning about common cat disease like cat kidney disease and others, you may be able to avoid this dangerous cat illness.

Few people think of physical therapy as a viable option for rehabilitating injured cats. It is usually assumed that cats will not cooperate, but contrary to popular belief, most do not resist treatment. Physical therapy can benefit most cats that have undergone surgery. It is helpful for cats with chronic disease or injury that causes pain, which may be displayed as limping, stiffness, aggression or social withdrawal.

How Does Physical Therapy Work?
After an operation, physical therapy reduces pain and swelling, increases strength in weakened muscles and improves the flexibility of joints.

Hot and Cold Treatments
Hot and cold treatments are known as passive rehabilitation techniques. They can be used immediately after a surgical procedure, and also to help chronic conditions such as arthritis. The application of cold compresses can reduce inflammation, pain and bleeding, and they can be applied for 20 minutes one to four times daily. It is important to place a layer of material between the cold pack and the cats skin so it is not uncomfortable.

Heat therapy can be used once the signs of inflammation have gone. Heat therapy increases metabolism and, when applied at this stage, helps decrease pain. Heat is usually applied for 20 minutes two to four times daily, but the applier must check the cats skin every few minutes to check it is not uncomfortably hot. Treatment should be stopped if the cat shows any signs of discomfort.

Therapeutic Ultrasound
Therapeutic ultrasound is another of the passive rehabilitation techniques. This increases the extensibility of collagen fibres, improves muscle condition and improves blood flow to the area treated. In doing this, it decreases pain and accelerates healing. Care must be taken in cats that have had metal implants to fix fractures, as reflection of the waves off the metal can intensify the heat and cause burns.

Another modern technique being pioneered by some clinics is phototherapy, also known as cold laser. This involves applying a low power light to an area that accelerates tissue repair.

Passive Range of Motion
Passive range of motion is the next step in the rehabilitation program. This involves extending and manipulating the cats joint, and can be started before the cat is fully weight bearing. This can be very important in cats that have had splints or casts applied, when the joints have been static for some time. By carrying out controlled movement, scar and connective tissue is strengthened and the effects of contracture are minimised.

Active Rehabilitation
Active rehabilitation can start once a cat starts using an injured limb more. This further increases muscle strength, muscle endurance and flexibility. There are various techniques available, such as the use of balls, balance boards, slings and aquatic therapy.

When doing the ball exercise, the cat lies on the top of the inflatable ball and is supported. The ball is gently rolled forward until the cats front paws come into contact with the ground. The ball is then bounced gently, which helps strengthen trunk muscles as the cat maintains balance. The ball is then rolled back until the hind paws touch the floor, and then gently bounced again. Cats may resist the therapy at first, but soon become accustomed to the rhythmic movement of the ball.

Balance boards are platforms with a curved rubber bottom. The cat is placed on the centre of the board with its feet shoulder width apart, and the board is slowly rocked from side to side. This is excellent for restoring stability in the early stages of weight bearing after fracture or joint surgery. Slings help support the cat during the early stages of recovery from many conditions where the nervous system has been affected, and are particularly useful as support for cats that have had pelvic surgery.

Aquatic therapy is best performed with a custom designed water tank and underwater treadmill. It provides outstanding rehabilitation for soft tissue injuries, arthritis, post surgery fracture care, post amputation care and neurological problems. It is excellent for increasing strength, flexibility and endurance, while reducing the risk of reinjury.

How long should the therapy go on for?
The length and frequency of therapy depends entirely on the type of injury, age and general health of the cat. Most fracture repairs benefit from therapy 2 to 3 times a week for 6 weeks, while chronic conditions such as arthritis require twice weekly therapy indefinitely (though this usually occurs at home). The owners motivation is the key factor in the success of the therapy, but with some simple demonstrations and a little effort, a huge difference can be made.

Is professional physical therapy in a clinic expensive?
There is a lot of variety among clinics, largely dependent on the expertise of the therapists and the facilities available. Expect to pay US$50 to $75 per session.

Wild animals hide their injuries and illnesses to avoid drawing the attention of predators as a matter of survival. Your domestic pet has this same natural instinct to conceal an injury or illness even though they do not have to worry about predators. Because a dog, cat, bird, or other family pet often suffers silently and without exhibiting obvious symptoms of distress, you must take charge of safeguarding your pet’s health for them.

Uncovering hidden injuries, detecting medical conditions early, and vaccinating pets against diseases, are good reasons for your pet to have routine visits with your veterinarian. Another good way to look out for your pet’s health is to examine them for fleas and ticks, small cuts or abrasions, or soreness in their joints, while grooming or petting them. You should also keep an eye on your pet’s food and water intake as well as checking stools left in the yard or litter box, as changes in these are often the first signs of health issues with your pet.

A number of prescription and nonprescription medicines can enhance pet health, too. These are safe for use with your pet for treating a variety of conditions and in preventing others. Your vet can explain what a medicine prescribed for your pet is supposed to do, as well as any side effects to watch for should you agree to place your pet on that medicine. It is wisest to discuss with your veterinarian whether any nonprescription medicines you are considering for your pet are the right choice for his or her health needs.

Dogs and cats are susceptible to the misery caused by biting fleas and ticks, whether they live primarily indoors or out. These biting pests are unrelenting in the pain and itching they inflict on your pet, and left untreated, can cause your pet anemia and other serious health issues. Treating your pet regularly with flea and tick medicine kills adult fleas, eggs, larvae, and ticks living on your pet quickly, and repels new fleas and ticks from hitching a ride on your pet. Households with multiple pets will need to treat each animal with flea and tick medicine to protect them, and to prevent a large infestation of these pests in the home. Frontline and Advantage are two popular brands of prescription flea and tick medicines with solutions made for both dogs and cats.

Heartworm is an insidious disease that kills many dogs and cats each year. You can help prevent heartworm from attacking your dog or cat by giving him or her heartworm medicine. Typically, you give your dog or cat heartworm medicine once a month in the form of a chewable tablet that is often liver-flavored to make it more palatable to your pet. The successful cat treatment of many heartworm cases is possible when detected early enough. That is why annual heartworm tests for your pet are very important.

Cats spend a good portion of their waking hours grooming themselves. Cats have rough tongues and this habit of continuous grooming introduces loose fur hairs into their bodies. A small amount of fur usually can easily move through the digestive tract and to the bowels for elimination without much problem. However, larger amounts of ingested fur hairs can cause blockages that may lead to severe intestinal and bowel distress for your cat. Pet medicines with laxative properties can prevent fur from balling-up inside your cat so that it can move through the intestinal tract to the bowels for eliminating before causing your cat difficulties.

Proper dental hygiene for both cats and dogs can prevent tooth loss and gum disease. Dental brushes for dogs as well as canine toothpaste helps make it easier for pet owners to clean and care for their dogs teeth. Many cats are not fond of having a dental brush placed n their mouths. You may find it easier to give your cat ‘dental chews’ which taste good to the cat, and are designed to clean your cat’s teeth. A weekly cleaning of your pet’s teeth can help keep their teeth healthy. This will also help you to avoid more costly teeth cleaning by a veterinarian for severe tartar build-up on your cat’s teeth.

Cats and dogs have ailments and diseases that are unique to them. They also have behaviors that their human companions want under control. There are many prescription and nonprescription medicines to aid in keeping your pet healthy physically, and behaviorally. Online pet pharmacies are a convenient and money-saving way for you to get the medicines your pet needs for optimal health. Many of them are also a good resource for more in-depth information about your pet, and the pet medicines that can help keep your pet healthy. Safeguard your pet’s health today so that they are with you and your family for a long time to come.

Did you know your cat could suffer from degenerative joint disease? Most of us do not realize that our cats can suffer from DJD just as we do. We attribute lameness as arthritis to dogs, but most of us do not think of a cat suffering from lameness. But what joint pain treatments for cats are there out there? And which are the most effective? If you are looking for feline pain relief therapy then one option is Flexpet. I have used this myself and know that the results are definately positive and can help your pet cat or dog.

Why? Because cats have a tendency to hide their deficiencies, most often it takes a veterinarian to find it. A cat that is suffering from degenerative joint disease may limp for a moment or two after waking up from a nap, but then will walk normally and you will never really pay attention to the symptom.

What is DJD? In a healthy joint the cartilage covers and cushions the opposite ends of the joint. In DJD the cartilage, (which has no nerves,) wears away through time and age, leaving the bones (which have nerves) to touch each other and thus create pain for your cat. It is sort of like having sandpaper between your knees and walking with the sandpaper rubbing against you. Not comfortable at all!

What are the symptoms? Since cats are very clever at hiding their symptoms, it is up to you, the pet parent, to be aware of your cat’s behavior, especially as your cat ages.

In addition to lameness which you may not notice right off hand, your cat may take to hiding more, this is a genetic behavior going back to the days of wild cats, as they try to hide their health problems from their enemies.

Other signs might be licking or biting a certain area as an attempt to make the pain go away. Looking for soft and warm places to lay down. A decrease in appetite as walking or climbing to the food and water dishes is too painful. Litter box problems, it may be too painful to climb into the box or hurt to cover up its messes. Suddenly not jumping up on its favorite couch or chair may become apparent, as it hurts to jump.

If you are in the habit of keeping your cat’s food in a high place and you are beginning to notice it is not eating like it should, I recommend a trip to the vet for a check up, as you do not want your cat to become dehydrated.

Early detection is important; however, with a cat’s ability to hide its symptoms it can be difficult. That is why knowing your cat and its habits are really very important, as the changes can be subtle and not really noticed until the cat ages. DJD is a slow moving disease and unless you are truly aware of your cat’s daily habits you may miss it all together, assuming that poor grooming and grumpiness is just a sign of aging and it really is a sign of pain. In this scenario you will want to find the best pain relief treatment for cats.

There are two types of DJD. Primary DJD which is the normal wear and tear on aging joints and secondary DJD which is caused by other conditions. Trauma, hip dysplasia, malformed joints, tumors or autoimmune diseases can be causes of secondary DJD.

Your vet can examine your cat and manipulate its joints, feel for heat at the joints and take X- rays, but the best authority on helping find the cause of your cat’s discomfort is you. Cats can hide their reaction to pain in the vet’s office, but you by knowing your cat’s habits can tell the vet first hand how you cat is behaving at home. That is why knowing your cat is so important.

What is the treatment for DJD? Generally a vet will prescribe a non-steroid anti-inflammatory drug for long term use, along with Omega-3 fatty acids, surgery might be necessary for a really bad joint, but in general managing your cat’s activities is one of the most important things you can do.

If your cat is overweight, reducing the amount of food is necessary, dry food which is high in carbohydrates should be fed sparingly, eliminate extra treats and table food scraps. Every ounce lost is less weight on a sore limb and really counts.

Making food and litter boxes more accessible is a help, carpet and padded pet ramps makes it easier for your cat to get to its favorite places. In some cases a heated bed offers a great deal of comfort,

As humans, we really do not like to be in pain and we relish the fact when someone offers to help us either by helping to eliminate the pain or just making our lives more comfortable, your cat feels the same. It is important that you do not try to give your cat any human pain relievers or any other over the counter pain killers, they could be lethal for your cat. Only ever give your pet, cat pain relievers!

Kitty cannot tell us he/she is in pain, but I will say this once more, if you pay attention to your cat’s normal everyday habits, you will be able to sense the fact your cat is hurting, and then you can do something to help Kitty get better. Pain relief for cats can help your pet live a full and happy life, especially in their old age.

If your considering pet insurance for you cat then you should make sure understand exactly what is on offer. Many pets suffer from arthritis and joint pain as they get older and may require some form of pain relief for cats. Of course, there are many reasons why you may want to have your pet insured and here we take a deeper look to help you understand more.

There are many issues to consider when purchasing health insurance for your cat or kitten. Purchasing health insurance for your pet can help you afford a procedure that would otherwise be prohibitively expensive. Accidents or disease are events that we can’t anticipate or foresee, but we can safeguard against them – if we choose the right plan.

"How Do I Choose a Plan?"
Many variables need to be considered in choosing the right pet health insurance plan, including your financial circumstances, the environment in which you live, whether or not you have other pets, and what veterinary service you do business with. First, if you already have a vet with whom you have a trusting relationship, you need to find out what pet health insurance companies they accept. Most vets limit the number of insurance companies they work with, as doing so makes it easier for them to recommend a treatment course of action that they know will be a covered expense.

"What Procedures Are Covered by my Plan?"
Another point to consider stems from the fact that depending on the procedure that is recommended for your pet, a referral to another specialist, animal hospital, or veterinary school may be necessary. In this case, you want to be sure that the services of the referred specialist are also covered by your plan. Naturally, you also need to weigh the various insurance options available to you. There are various levels of coverage available, with some being far more comprehensive (and somewhat more expensive) than others. Make sure that you fully understand what is covered under your plan. While surgical procedures following an accident may be covered, for example, other conditions may not – such as pre-existing conditions or disease that may be related to a hereditary condition.

"What Level of Deductible is Appropriate for Me?"
In choosing your plan, you will be given a choice of the level of deductible. This is the amount of money that you will have to pay before the insurance kicks in. Generally speaking, the higher the amount of the deductible, the lower your monthly premium will be. Sometimes the deductible may be per-incident, or in other cases, there may be a yearly deductible. One plan may offer 90% coverage with a 10% deductible, for instance. Since it’s impossible to know which option would ultimately be the least expensive, most people choose an option that represents a compromise: a monthly premium that can fit into their budget, and a deductible that will be affordable if the situation arises.

"Are Prescription Medications Covered?"
Prescription medicines are usually not covered as a matter of course, though some companies may offer this as an option for an additional fee. Chronic conditions such as feline diabetes require medications that can be quite expensive, so this may be an option worth considering. Bear in mind that this coverage may only include the cost of the medication alone, and not the cost of the corresponding office visit to your vet.

"Do Insurance Plans Offer Wellness Treatment?"
More comprehensive pet insurance plans may include coverage for certain preventative procedures. This ‘wellness treatment’ may include certain procedures such as vaccination shots, or neutering and spaying. The costs of these treatments are fairly predictable, and so this coverage may not save you money in the long run, but it would allow you to amortize the costs of these procedures over time, making budgeting for them a little easier. If you pet is suffering from cat athritis and joint pain then I suggest you try out a product called Flexpet, my cat has been moving around more than he has done for ages since he stated taking it.

"What Course of Action is the Least Expensive?"
Ultimately, we can never be certain about which course of action will be the least costly to us. Taking out insurance is really no more than placing a bet – but it’s a bet that we hope to lose. We don’t want to have accident or a fire so that we can take advantage of our auto or home insurance policies. Similarly, we may choose health insurance for our pet, but we want our pets to remain healthy. At the very least, pet health insurance can afford us peace of mind.

"What Must I do to Determine if This is Right for Me?"
It would be wise to research and understand insurance options for your pet before you need it. If your pet is robust and healthy, it may make sense to hold off. If your pet is older or more prone to illness, having health insurance may save you a lot of money. Prepare yourself with the necessary knowledge so that you can make an informed decision. Find out what insurance companies are accepted by your vet. Get information from those companies, comparing plans, costs, and coverage. Determine what you can afford based on your financial circumstances. In this way you will be prepared to best deal with lapses in your pet’s health in a way that is compatible with your budget.

Many cat suffer from arthritis as they get older, but how can you help them and ease the pain and stiff joints. Understanding how to spot the symptoms and how to look after your stiff legged pet will help to keep your cat comfortable and happy in the old age. You can buy athritis treatments for cats, I have tried a few with mine and he has responded best to Flexpet.

Arthritis in an elderly cat is as common as it is in an elderly person. Just like humans their cartilage wears out and becomes thin allowing for bones to rub together causing inflammation and pain. Knowing if your cat has arthritis is something that only a vet can accurately diagnose however there are various symptoms that might lead you to suspect that your cat is feeling their age and a little creaky.

It may become noticeable that your cat starts to walk with stiff legs and becomes more and more reluctant to go outside, preferring instead to sleep more and generally be less active. Picking up your cat may also become something that you do less as they tend to cry out as they are lifted, this could be due to pain in the cats joints.

If your cat is diagnosed with arthritis there is unfortunately no cure for the condition, but there are medicines that can be given which will ease the inflammation and pain for your pet. Your vet is likely to prescribe one of the NSAID (non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs) that are similar to the human drug ibuprofen; as well reducing the cats pain they will also slow the progression of the illness.

As a cat owner it can be difficult for us to see our pets in discomfort and not being able to get around as much as they used to. The desire to want to provide your cat with as much help and support to cope with the arthritis and through their old age is natural and luckily there are a few things that can be done to make your pets life a little more comfortable.

Making sure that your home is cat friendly and that it is easy for your arthritic cat to get around is probably one of the easiest things you can do. Make sure that their bedding is placed on a low surface and that it is easy to climb into. The bed should also be well padded to make it as comfortable for old bones as possible, there are even special orthopaedic cat beds available that help to distribute body weight so that joints are not under any pressure.

Make sure that litter trays do not have high sides, which would be difficult to climb in and out of and place all food, and water bowls on the floor in a safe area where the cat will not be disturbed. Even floor surfaces should be made easy to walk on. Polished floors can be slippy and difficult to walk on with stiff legs; placing mats down in areas where your cat normally spends their time is a good solution.

A cat with arthritis pain and stiffness will need special food to meet their dietary needs, which will help support their system to fend off illness and to keep their bones as strong as possible. If possible home prepared cat food is the best option as it allows you to only feed your pet the best food without any of the synthetic preservatives found in commercial food. The types of food which would help your pet are fresh meat, raw vegetables with added pet vitamins and daily supplements, but it is always best to check with your vet to make sure that certain foods are ok to feed to your cat.

If preparing your own homemade cat food is not for you, there are plenty of top quality cat foods available on the market that is suited for the elderly cat. However do check that they do not contain ethoxyquin preservatives, BHA and BHT nitrates, as these over time can be harmful to your arthritic cat.

Keeping your cat as active as possible is also to be encouraged with a cat with arthritis. They will not want to do much and so will require some gentle persuasion on your part. Keeping them active is important for two reasons. Firstly an inactive cat is prone to put weight on which will increase the pressure on their joints. Secondly it will help to keep the joints mobile and not to stiffen too much. Even a very gentle game of chase the string or find the treat once a day may make all the difference for your cats long term mobility and health.

Your veterinarian should be able to provide them for you. However, keep in mind that if your cat is overweight or obese then you should work out a diet.

Finding the best remedie to help treat your cat of arthritis or other joint pain can be a little bit overwhelming if you are not sure what the best option is. My vet reccomended Flexpet and I found it to work very well and I can be sure that my cat loves it. I adore my cats, I know them inside out and the change in Spock has been immense. I will be using this cat pain treatment now forever now, I alsways make sure I have some and to be fair they are normally offering some kind of deal on their website.

Cat arthritis is a common problem in elderly cats. Knowing how to spot the symptoms and how to look after your stiff legged pet will help to keep your cat comfortable and happy in the old age.

Picking up your cat may also become something that you do less as they tend to cry out as they are lifted, this could be due to cat pain in their joints.

If your cat is diagnosed with arthritis there is unfortunately no cure for the condition, but there are arthritis medicines that can be given which will ease the inflammation and pain for your pet.
